If you haven’t been to Honolulu in the last few years, you haven’t really seen Waik-ik-i. This iconic beach and its neighborhood
have blossomed, with major infusions of wealth and imagination. One of the highlights is the Waik-ik-i Beach Walk,
a $535-million redevelopment project that began its phased opening in December 2006. Now home to more than 40
restaurants, shops and galleries, as well as a Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame exhibit, the open-air complex connecting vibrant
Kalakaua Avenue to the beach is lively from morning to night. The Trump International Hotel and Tower, scheduled to open
next to the Beach Walk next year, will add even more excitement to the area. Waik-ik-i is also the focal point of a huge
variety of festivals and events. Brunch on the Beach lights up Kalakaua Avenue one Sunday each month, while Sunset
on the Beach offers free outdoor concerts and movies throughout the year. Then there’s the Aloha Festivals in September,
the World Invitational Hula Festival in November and the Honolulu Marathon in December, among many other events.
Clearly, the Beach Walk isn’t the only thing keeping Waik-ik-i rolling.
